(Washington, DC) – National Board Chairman Terry W. Hamilton announced the support of the Log Cabin Republicans for the 'No on One: Protect Maine Equality' campaign, opposing a referendum to overturn the bipartisan marriage equality bill signed into law in May.

"Log Cabin Republicans firmly supports the 'No on One' campaign in the fight to preserve the rights and freedoms of Maine's citizens to marry," said Hamilton. "We stand ready to assist the campaign in the fight for fundamental freedoms  – the principle that all Maine's citizens have the right to marry and should be treated fairly and equally under the law. As we did in California in 2008, Log Cabin Republicans will work with our allies in the gay and Republican communities to articulate that we have a common goal in the preservation of limited government, personal responsibility, and Constitutionally-protected rights and freedoms," Hamilton added.

Log Cabin Republicans joins a broad coalition which includes the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians, the American Association of University Women, Maine Women's Lobby, the Maine Bar Association's Elder, Family, and Women's Law Sections as well as NAACP's Portland and Bangor chapters.

"This is about defending the conservative principals of limited government and individual responsibilities that Republicans have always been for," stated Scott Kauffman, Chairman of the Log Cabin Republicans of Maine. "Supporting 'No on One' is about doing what's right for all Mainers, regardless of their sexual orientation. Maine's marriage equality law saw bipartisan support, led by the likes of Senator Peter Mills. We will move forward in a successful campaign, communicating our values to our neighbors and friends," Kauffman added.
