Michael Gaster, candidate for the Georgia's Second Senate District, is proving once again why he is not your typical Georgia Republican running for office. In an announcement yesterday, the Georgia chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans endorsed Gaster in his race against State Senator Lester Jackson. The Log Cabin Republicans are a political action group that works within the Republican Party to advocate equal rights for the gay and lesbian community. "Log Cabin Republicans endorse Michael Gaster for the Georgia State Senate's Second District. He is a leader who recognizes that liberty is a right that every individual should enjoy, including gays and lesbians," said Jamie Ensley, president of the Georgia chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans.

Michael is the first Republican politician running in Georgia, outside of Atlanta, to receive an endorsement from the group - and he embraces it. "If you go back and really look at the principles of the Republican Party, we don't discriminate against anyone. In fact, the first principle states how the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person's dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored. Nowhere do the principles discriminate on sexual orientation. I think no matter what your sexual orientation is everyone is entitled to fair political representation and the chance to live their lives freely without government interference. I share the Log Cabin Republicans' commitment to limited government, individual responsibility, free markets and a strong defense."

The election for the Second Senate district will be held on November 2nd, 2010.
