(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Log Cabin Republicans congratulates and thanks Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell for signing marriage equality legislation into law.

"I am proud that a Republican governor has led the way to ensuring fairness & equality, as well as enabling those in her state to form unions best suited to their commitments to each other," stated Log Cabin Republicans Board Chairman Terry Hamilton. "Log Cabin Republicans applauds and thanks our ally Governor Jodi Rell for codifying marriage equality in Connecticut."

The marriage equality legislation specifically reiterates a commitment to religious freedom. Although Connecticut State Law already allows religious orders to choose whether or not to marry same-sex couples with no penalty or punishment, legislation passed by Connecticut state General Assembly reaffirms that intent. The bipartisan votes included 14 Republicans, 28-7 in the Senate and 100-44 in the House.

Almost four years ago to this day, Governor Rell signed into law Connecticut's first civil-union law with bipartisan support.

Log Cabin Republicans spokesman Charles T. Moran states: "Religious freedom and marriage equality do not have to be mutually exclusive. Republicans in Connecticut are leading the way to address fairness and equality issues and should serve as a model for other states. Governor Rell and our Republican allies in the Connecticut Legislature are advancing marriage equality."
