WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Log Cabin Republicans National office is calling for the formal condemnation of the Harris County Republican Party for their vitriolic anti-gay bias displayed in rejecting Log Cabin Republicans of Houston Vice President Christopher Busby from a Precinct Chair vacancy. An outrageous, ignorant and homophobic line of questioning of Busby led by Harris County Republican Party Vacancy Committee member Terry Lowry insinuated Busby's association with Log Cabin Republicans meant he supported "pedophilia" and was unworthy of being a Precinct Chairman. Ultimately, despite no other competition for the vacancy, Busby was rejected by a 5-4 vote. The seat still stands vacant.

"Since learning about this outrageous incident last week, the Log Cabin Republicans National office has attempted to work in good faith with the Harris County Republican Party, the Texas State Republican Party, and the Republican National Committee on this issue, but our best efforts to secure a simple condemnation of Terry Lowry and his mind-boggling ignorance were met with hand-sitting," said Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo.

"This is 2013, not 1973. And this isn't a local issue; it's a national outrage. We can have a civil debate about marriage within the Republican Party, but we should all be able to agree that equating gay people with pedophiles is beyond the pale and should not be tolerated  – ever. Ultimately the members of the Vacancy Committee and County Chairman Jared Woodfill, who appointed them, have rejected Reagan and the big-tent philosophy which has made our party what it is today. Terry Lowry needs to resign, Christopher Busby needs to be appointed to fill that vacancy, and the Harris County GOP needs to get its act together unless it wants to bear the responsibility for handing Texas to the Democrats on a silver platter in 2014."

A member of Log Cabin Republicans, Busby is the current Vice President of Log Cabin Republicans of Houston and campaigned for several GOP candidates on the municipal, state, and federal level.

The incident has sparked outrage against Lowry and Chairman Woodfill of the Harris County Republican Party. There have been hundreds of messages of support for Busby from the Republican Liberty Caucus, the Houston Tea Party, and individuals in the Texas Republican Party who know anti-gay bigotry when they see it. Log Cabin Republicans is proud to stand with them, and in support of our member Christopher Busby.
