(Washington, DC and Bay City, Michigan) Log Cabin Republicans National and Log Cabin Republicans of Michigan today jointly issued a call for the removal of Michigan RNC Committeeman, Dave Agema, for his unwarranted anti-gay rhetoric.

In a recent speech, Agema used antiquated science from the early 1990s to justify his support for what he calls "traditional marriage," by implying gay men live drastically shorter lives and are more prone to criminal activity.

"The Michigan Republican Party is acting as is if it is helpless in this situation by saying that there is nothing that they can do about it. It's just a ploy. They are deflecting and hoping the issue goes away. They can do something about it and they should," said Joe Sylvester, Chairman of Log Cabin Republicans of Michigan.

While there is no mechanism to remove a rogue National Committee member in Michigan, the Michigan Republican Party must amend its bylaws to allow for the removal of members who are drastically reducing Republican prospects of winning elections. Short of that, Mr. Agema's colleagues in the RNC and Chairman Priebus must insist he step down.

"One word: resign," Log Cabin Republicans National Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo stated. "Dave Agema has repeatedly shown that he is unfit to represent the many good Republicans in Michigan who understand that his brand of 'conservatism' isn't doing the party any favors. Log Cabin Republicans stands shoulder-to-shoulder with GOP officials across the state such as Governor Snyder, Chairman Welday, House Speaker Jase Bolger and Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville in condemning Agema's bigotry. The Michigan State GOP has a great opportunity this weekend when it convenes: they can show the people of Michigan and the United States that Dave Agema's positions are not representative of the Republican Party, and demand his resignation."
