(Washington, DC) – Log Cabin Republicans join the New Jersey Republican Party in calling for Governor James McGreevey to resign by September 2nd in order to trigger a special election. The fair-minded people of New Jersey, not the departing Governor, should decide who should lead New Jersey during these challenging times. On Thursday, Governor McGreevey announced he is a gay American and intends to resign following a series of personal, political and legal controversies that the Governor determined would distract from his gubernatorial responsibilities.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Governor McGreevey's family. Our sympathies are also with the Governor whose difficult personal journey in acknowledging his sexual orientation is mirrored by too many of his generation. Thankfully, today we live in a more tolerant nation where citizens care about a public servant's character and qualifications not their sexual orientation.

Log Cabin Republicans salute the more than 275 openly gay and lesbian elected officials in America who serve with honesty and integrity. We also salute the critical work of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund that successfully works to increase the number of openly gay and lesbian elected officials across America.
