As our thirty-ninth president lies in repose during his final days in Atlanta, we send our condolences to his family and friends and join with them in honoring his memory. Jimmy Carter was the earliest U.S. president to publicly support our community, and as gay Americans, we would be remiss in not acknowledging his support of the proposed Equality Act of 1976, which would have banned discrimination based on sexual orientation.
As proud Georgians, we remember President Carter's return to his humble homestead in Plains following his presidency. He was the epitome of humility and tenacity, even in defeat. His hard-fought Middle East peace efforts, which culminated in the Camp David Accords, saved thousands to millions of lives. His work with the Carter Center was both extensive and impressive, be it disease eradication, Habitat for Humanity, world peace, women's equality, or innumerable other causes. Georgia Log Cabin Republicans President Collin W. Scheible says, "His post-presidency was a model for true dedication to the betterment of the world around him, and one to which we might all aspire."
"In this era of divisive politics, Georgia Log Cabin Republicans stands in solidarity with our fellow Georgians in celebrating the memory of our first and only president from the Peach State. While we may not agree with all of his policies or decisions, we certainly honor his commitment to faith, ethics, morality, service, and his fellow man," Scheible added.
