(Washington, DC) - Log Cabin Republicans President Patrick Sammon made this statement following the California Secretary of State's certification of a ballot measure to ban marriage equality for same-sex couples:

"The effort to defeat the anti-marriage amendment will be long and difficult, but make no mistake about it-we will win. We're confident the people of California will vote in favor of freedom and fairness.

"Log Cabin Republicans will do all we can to ensure that every California citizen, particularly Republicans, understand that it would be a mistake to deny same-sex couples the freedom to marry. We're thankful to have Republican Gov. Schwarzenegger on our side-opposing this effort to rollback basic protections for loving, committed gay and lesbian families.

"Marriage is good for all Americans-gay and straight. It promotes values that strengthen society and the family: love, commitment, respect, and freedom. All families should be treated the same.

"Log Cabin Republicans began 30 years ago in California when a group of gay and lesbian Republicans organized to help defeat an anti-gay measure that would have banned gay Californians from teaching in public schools. We proudly stood on the front lines of fairness by helping defeat that measure. Now, we are proud to once again stand up for freedom and fairness."
